Key Stakeholder, Building Community Food Networks Report

What is a Food System?

A food system is the path that food travels from fields to your fork, and all the components that are a part of that path. Some of these components include government policies, resources available for production such as land and water, and the availability and affordability of healthy food.

A local, or community food system considers not only this path, but also the relationships, networks, and the people that make it possible.

The History of MarCo

MarCo first came together in 2015 after a group of food systems stakeholders – including non-profits, growers, and community-based organizations – realized the need to better coordinate the many food-related efforts across the county. Through support from Vitalyst Health Foundation, the Coalition was formed to connect and leverage these efforts towards common goals.
